The Relevance of Addressing Them and the Stereotypes of Latinas
Spanish women are usually depicted in media as caramel skinned, tight- bodied, sexy, curvy, and feisty. When we hear the term “latina notion,” they are the people we all associate with. They have a heavy dialect, a beautiful voice, and a peppery individuality. 16 young Latinas who participated in focus groups and semistructured interviews between November 2014 and June 2015 at two federally qualified health centers in Baltimore, Maryland, are the subjects of this article’s use of a social determinant of health ( Sdh) framework. Three main themes emerged: Participants shared a desire and capacity to maximize their potentials through contraceptive firm, believed they were responsible for their households’ economic well-being, frequently anticipating the birth of their future kids, and emphasized the importance of postponing childbirth in order to achieve both academic and professional objectives. These findings demonstrate how crucial it is to address female prejudices to enable Latinas to reach their full potential. Translating these results into successful, physician- centered counseling by family planning providers may support the aspirations of youthful Latinas and promote equity in health care access.
